What is Occupational Psychiatry?

Occupational Psychiatry is at the interface of two areas of specialization in medicine: psychiatry and occupational medicine. Traditionally, psychiatrists have sought to better understand human behavior, emotions and thought processes in an effort to help the individual patient better adapt to his or her world. The field of occupational medicine focuses on the work environment and health problems found in particular industries. Occupational Psychiatry brings together mental health and occupational perspectives.

Technologic advances result in an ever-changing work environment in the 21st century. Yet, there remains a basic desire to find meaning to life through our jobs and careers. To provide, be of service and create value are elements of individual and collective health. The goal of Occupational Psychiatry is to identify mental health problems of workers so effective services can be implemented to improve productivity and quality of life.
